Are you satisfied with your career?

A typical reason most of us left our work for another opportunity because we are dissatisfied with our current career. The dissatisfaction can be due to poor relationship with the boss, colleagues, unexciting job responsibility/scope, low salary, family pressure, poor business conditions and many other reasons.

I did a research in the internet and found 10 common reasons many of us decided to quit are:

1.    The company is experiencing a downward spiral in business i.e. losing customers, losing money, and rumours of possible closure, bankruptcy and failure.

2.    Your relationship with your boss is damaged beyond repair.

3.    Your life situation has changed. Perhaps you are married or had a baby, the salary and benefits no longer support your family needs.

4.    Your values are not aligned with the corporate culture. Your company does annual employee satisfaction surveys and you think they are a waste of time. Your company is hierarchical but you want to influence every aspect of your job. No matter where the clash is occurring, a lack of congruence with the corporate culture destroyed your attitude at work.

5.    For whatever reason you’ve stopped having fun and enjoying your job. You feel difficult to go to work every morning.

6.    Your company is ethically challenged. Perhaps the manager lie to customers about the quality of the products or the day on which the product will be shipped. You become aware that the company is stealing information from competitors. Whatever the issues are, the ethics in the company are out of sync with yours.

7.    You have behaved in ways that are considered improper at work. You’ve missed too many days of work, slacked off on the job, failed to maintain needed skills, and / or just generally developed the reputation of a loser. You leave before you are fired.

8.    You’ve burned your bridges with your colleagues. Your group is not getting along in an environment that requires people to work well together.

9.    Your stress level is so high at work that it is affecting your physical or mental health and your relationships with your friends and family.

10.You are unchallenged, need more responsibility, and seek opportunities that just don’t exist for you in your current organization. You’ve explored the current and potential options, and they are limited.

BOSSOut of these 10 reasons, a research done in Canada shows that 84% of 2687 respondents decided to change or quit a job is because of the BOSS. Yes, because of the BOSS!!! It might be a geographical reason but from my personal experience in Malaysia, only a part of me agrees with the finding of the research.

No doubt having a good relationship with the boss is an important element in any successful working relationship. Creating a good working relationship with the boss not only will create opportunities for a successful career but also creating a healthy working environment and will definitely improve the organization productivity. Failing to create a good working relationship with the boss will only leads to conflict and the work pressure created due to this conflict will result in dissatisfaction and unhealthy working environment. If the conflict is uncontrollable, both parties might end up in violence. I’m sure we do not want this to happen.

Maybe your have tried your best to discuss your problem with your boss and maybe the way you communicate does not go through well. The best way to resolve it is by talking about it with your HR personnel for advice on how to handle this problem. Even though you are the cause of the problem, you have the right to be given a chance to improve yourself but don’t you ever betray that chance. Your boss also needs to realize his or her mistake and work together with you to resolve it. Need to put aside your ego, BOSS.EGO

I think that the boss is not to be blamed entirely for our dissatisfaction at work. Even though the popular reason goes to the boss maybe it is easier to blame the boss rather than to understand what is the main reason causing your

dissatisfaction at work.

The list above will be handy to understand the reason but it all boils down to you. You have the control before making the decision to quit. Competitively, the job market now is so fierce and getting a new job will not be so easy. So spend sometime to really understand the reason before finalizing the decision. I’m sure, there are solution to work around for any problems you encountered at work.

Good luck!!

All the best.
